Getting to design a garden for the wellknown, published interior designer and Geotuner, Brittney Herrera, was an amazing opportunity – and, if I’m being honest, a little intimidating. Like all of our design processes we started with a Landscape Consultation. The design needed to deal with a soggy lawn and a front yard that had good bones, a lovely walkway… and not much else.

While we all dream of instant inspiration, Landscape Consultations don’t create the answers on the spot. More thought and planning needs to happen. I actually took this plan with me all the way to Bali and worked on it on my vacation. Don’t worry, I still had plenty of fun and relaxation! In the end, we created a design that solved the drainage issue, enhanced their outdoor living space, and gave dynamic accents to the front yard.

By extending the backyard living area with compacted decomposed granite we solved the drainage problem while also adding square footage for entertaining. Enhancing and rearranging plantings in the backyard helped it feel lush and complete. The front yard is filled with color, texture, and food for pollinators – giving it interest all year long. In fact, the walkway we installed is used by the neighborhood Peacocks – they use it as a runway.
